The one year teacher training program started in 1990 has grown into a full-fledged
Bachelor of Special Education Degree Course affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University.
It helps meet the need for teachers for educating children with special needs.
In 2003, SBT college received a citation for BEST INSTITUTION IN SPECIAL EDUCATION by
the Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi. National level bodies offer such
educational programs through our college in distance mode. The State Government has
given recognition for employment of students in Educational Institutions.
We motivate talent development among children with special needs by conducting various
competitions. In two of our Community Based Rehabilitation Centers at Veerapandi and
Melamadai, the Family Intervention program has been initiated with 20 families with
disabled children. During weekends our students offer technical guidance to parents
and siblings in caring for the disabled person in "Basic Skill Development for
Independent Living". Mostly the cases selected are those who are severe and cannot
go to special institutions.
For national level bodies (RCI, BHOJ) we conduct Special Education training in B.Ed.
and help in drafting the syllabus. We assist the National Council for Teacher Education
(NCTE) and National Human Rights Commission (NHRD) in the preparation of resource material
in Special Education. We conduct workshops for young lecturers on Institutional
Assessment and Computer Assisted Instructional Materials development. We Telecast
open interviews on early intervention, Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy for the benefit
of families with disabled persons. Special Educators, Physiotherapists, Nurses,
Social workers and Parents [with Disadvantaged children] are helped by Continuing
Rehabilitation Education (C.R.E).
